西方历史的绝食抗议，可回遡到基督徒与东正教徒的禁食斋戒活动。当然也有由民俗历史进行考察，提出在中世纪前后的古爱尔兰地区，贫困民户们抗议不公义行为而在债主家门前绝食的古老典故。相较于古老的抗议传统，比较近代的例子中，讨论者多半以印度圣雄甘地为例，提到了甘地如何在不抵抗运动中如何用绝食与英国殖民政府对抗，并且将此视为将绝食与政治运动结合的初始。

观点：古巴绝食抗议暴露出不断加深的危机

ThepandemicyearhasbeenespeciallyhardforCuba.Theimport-dependentislandwasalreadyhitbyTrumpadministrationsanctionsandalossofVenezuela’soilwhenthecoronavirusdecimatedtourism.Theeconomyplunged11percentlastyear,andhardshipandshortagesareleadingmanyCubanstorecallthe“specialperiod”ofextremedeprivationafterSovietsubsidiesdisappearedinthes.Backthen,Cubanslearnedtoimprovisewithless—makinga“steak”outoffriedgrapefruitrind,forexample.
